Toe Infections

Toe infections can be a result of various factors, including trauma, ingrown toenails, or fungal infections. Such infections can cause discomfort, redness, swelling, and discharge from the affected area. Prompt treatment is important to prevent the spread of infection and avoid complications.

At Carrollton Foot Center, our podiatrist, Dr. Khavari, evaluates toe infections through a physical examination to determine the extent of the infection. In some cases, x-rays or other imaging tests may be required to identify any underlying bone or joint involvement.

The treatment for toe infections typically starts with conservative measures, such as topical or oral antibiotics, to eliminate the infection. For ingrown toenail-related infections, a partial or total nail avulsion may be necessary to remove the ingrown portion of the nail and prevent the recurrence of the infection.

It’s important to note that if left untreated, toe infections can spread to the surrounding tissue, bones, or bloodstream, leading to serious complications. If the infection is severe or shows no improvement with conservative measures, our podiatrist may recommend surgery to remove the infected tissue or bone.

To prevent toe infections, proper foot hygiene is important, including washing your feet regularly, keeping your toenails trimmed, and wearing clean and properly fitting shoes. It’s also essential to address any foot conditions promptly, such as ingrown toenails or athlete’s foot, to prevent the development of infections.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of a toe infection, don’t hesitate to contact Carrollton Foot Center for an evaluation and treatment. Our team is committed to providing personalized and effective care to help you achieve optimal foot health.
